Community Action
Service to the Community

 Join Community Action Committee

If service to the community speaks to you, WE NEED YOU...your ideas and your heart.  The Community Action Committee is Unity’s liaison to the larger community.  We recommend and coordinate community involvement.  This includes Unity’s tithing to community organizations as well as Unity’s participation in projects benefiting the community.

Loving Leadership of Community Action Committee

The Community Action Committee (CAC) has been lovingly guided by Barbara Tuck for several years, and we thank and honor her for her wise leadership. It is now time to turn over the leadership to the next person that spirit taps on the shoulder.  Is this you?  If you feel called to support our community through service, please contact ministerial assistant Patricia DeMichele at (925) 937-2191 ext 301, or at office@unitycenter.net.

Helping the Homeless in our Community -- Bag Lunches

Most weekends Unity Center provides hearty lunches for the homeless. These lunches are delivered to the North Concord Shelter on Sundays at 11:00am as part of the Friends Feeding Friends program. We always welcome helping hands to prepare sandwiches, pack the lunchbags, and deliver them to the grateful recipients. If you'd like to just drop in for a day or join our teams regularly, you are very welcome.

Please note that since Unity Center has moved to Heather Farm Community Center in July 2009 (while our Center undergoes remodeling) we no longer prepare the Saturday lunches in the kitchen area at Unity Center.

Donations
You can also help by donating money for our feeding the homeless activities. Write a check made out to Unity Center; designate it for  “feeding the homeless” and put it in the prosperity basket on any Sunday.

Please participate in our Food Drive for the Monument Crisis Center Bring food on Sundays, Jan. 10 through Feb. 7, 2010.
See link for food list.

Here are some of the activities we have had in the past year:
  • Feeding the homeless and hungry: Every Saturday morning we make 70 bag lunches.
  • Shelter Week: We provide meals and other help for a week to homeless families in the Concord and Martinez homeless shelters.
  • Book Drive: We collect money to buy books for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, many of whom are from low income homes in which English is a second language.
  • Back to School Drive: We collect new backpacks for kids and back-to-school supplies.
  • Warm Clothing Drive: In the Fall we collect warm clothes and rain gear and give them to homeless people.
  • Teddy Bear Drive: Before Christmas, we collect teddy bears of all shapes, sizes and varieties and these are auctioned off to raise money for seriously ill children in hospitals.
  • STAND! Christmas Tree: We have a Christmas tree in our patio loaded with ornaments printed with money amounts, from which people take the ornaments and buy gift certificates in the designated amounts. These are given to the STAND! Against Domestic Violence organization so that presents can be bought.
  • Food Bank Drive: During the month of December we collect food that is given to the Food Bank to assist it in providing food to people in need.
